Claude, GPT, Gemini or Grok? How to pick the right AI model
When Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok each shine, with a quick table for writing, reasoning, long documents and news, and how to use all four in one place.
Most people use one AI model for everything, usually because they pay for one app. But the models are not interchangeable. Each of the big four has things it does especially well, and picking the right one for the job is the easiest way to get better answers.
Here is a practical guide to when we reach for Claude, GPT, Gemini or Grok, based on how people actually use them in OneSpace.
The short version
| If you want to... | Start with |
|---|---|
| Write something long and careful, or think through a hard problem | Claude |
| Get fast, solid answers to everyday questions and tasks | GPT |
| Work with a very long document, or ask about an image | Gemini |
| Get a direct answer with a current edge | Grok |
These are starting points, not rules. The best habit is to try a second model when the first answer is not quite right.
Writing
Claude is a strong first pick for writing that needs care: a sensitive email, a long article, a proposal, or editing your own draft without flattening your voice. It tends to follow detailed instructions closely and keeps a consistent tone over long pieces.
For short, punchy copy such as a tweet, a subject line or ten headline options, GPT is quick and capable. Ask both and keep the line you like best.
Reasoning and hard problems
When a question needs several steps of thinking (planning a project, weighing a decision, debugging a tricky piece of logic), Claude is a good place to start. Turning up the thinking level helps on the hardest questions, at the cost of a slower reply.
Everyday questions and quick tasks
For the hundred small things in a day (rewording a sentence, converting units, summarizing a page, drafting a reply), GPT is a fast, dependable all-rounder. Lighter models are also a good fit here: they answer quickly and use fewer credits.
Long documents and images
Gemini handles very large amounts of text well, which makes it a natural pick for a long contract, a big report or a pile of meeting notes. It is also quick with images: ask what is in a screenshot, read a chart, or describe a photo.
Current events and a direct take
Grok is built for direct answers and has a sharp, current edge. For news and anything that changed this week, pair any model with web search so the answer comes with sources.
Why switching models mid-conversation matters
The real advantage is not picking one model. It is being able to switch without starting over. In OneSpace you can ask Claude to draft a plan, ask GPT to tighten it, and ask Gemini to check it against a long document, all in the same conversation, with the same memory and the same connected apps.
If you are not sure which to pick, choose Auto and OneSpace picks a model for each message.
What it costs
Stronger models cost more to run, so in OneSpace they use more credits per message, while lighter models use fewer. Every paid plan includes every model, from Plus at $8 a month. The Free plan covers the lighter models, plus OneSpace Free, which uses no credits at all. See the plans, or how the cost compares with paying for each company's own subscription.
Try it
Pick one question you asked an AI this week and ask it again in two different models. The difference is usually obvious within a sentence or two. You can do that today on the Free plan, and see every model we offer on the models page.
